Tip Calculator
Enter the restaurant bill, tip percentage, and number of people to find out exactly how much each person pays.
How it works
Calculate the tip as a percentage of the pre-tip bill, add it to get the total, then divide by the number of people for the per-person share.
Formula
Per person = (Bill + Bill × tip%) ÷ n
Add the tip to the total bill, then divide equally among the number of people.
| Symbol | Variable | Unit | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bill | Bill amount | ₹ | |
| tip% | Tip percentage | % | |
| n | Number of people | persons |
Worked example
₹2,400 dinner for 4 people, 10% tip
- Bill:
- ₹2,400
- Tip:
- 10%
- People:
- 4
Tip = 2400 × 0.10 = ₹240. Total = ₹2,640. Per person = 2640 ÷ 4 = ₹660.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant in India?
Tipping is optional in India. A 5–10% tip is appreciated at mid-range restaurants; 10–15% at upscale establishments. Fast food and street food don't usually expect tips. Check if a service charge is already included in the bill before tipping.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Pre-tax is more common and slightly less. Either is acceptable — the difference is small.
What if people ordered different amounts?
This calculator splits the total equally. For unequal splits, use the Bill Splitter calculator.
